First of all, the title of my installation art piece is called ‘Selfishness<Helpfulness’. The concept behind my art piece is to use the hearts with both sides in black Chinese ink to tell the viewers that because the boat crew members in the Korea boat incident chose to be selfish and this lead 300 people died. Therefore, we should be helpful and show our kindness when people need help.
I think that I did well with the visually scattered effect and the randomness feeling of the hearts, this makes the whole art piece would lead the viewers think that I am criticizing Korean. As my initial idea is to make a ship with the hearts, which is referring to the boat incident in Korea, though I want to use this art piece to inform the viewers that we should be helpful, not only in Korea, but also the rest of the world.
Moreover, the leading lines, which are the strings, are very useful and effective that it got a similar colour with the hearts and it would not steal the focus form the hearts as well. Origami can also make a sense of remembering, memory and dead for viewers, which we always saw origami crane in the funeral and this is related to the boat incident in Korea.
On the other hand, the amount of hearts are 300, which this represent the number of how many people died in the boat incident in Korea. I want to paint both sides of the hearts with ink, it represents the selfishness, but because of the time limitation, I could only paint one side of the hearts. This makes viewers to interpret a slightly different meaning from the ink and I think that the current meaning is suitable as well.
